De Pere, WI (August 18, 2023) – Wireless usage continues to climb driving the need for expanded wireless networks. Cellcom, a local carrier, has again significantly invested in its network in De Pere and Ledgeview to deliver strong wireless service to area residents and visitors. Two new cell sites were activated, along with two small cells to help address the increase in wireless use and further enhance the overall wireless experience.

“As demand for cell service continues to increase, particularly data, these new cell sites and small cells move users off high-traffic sites, which helps improve everyone’s experience delivering faster speeds, more connections at one time and additional coverage.,” said Rick Brooks, CTO and VP of Engineering for Cellcom. “This extra capacity is particularly beneficial during high-traffic events. The improvements result in a better wireless experience even during these busy times in the community and on our network.”

The activated new sites are located near Highway 43 and Pine Grove Rd. and on Heritage Rd. near Highway 32. Small cells are miniature, low-powered cell sites that can be placed in populated areas to further improve the wireless experience. Cellcom recently activated two small cells at busy areas along Heritage Rd.

“Small cells blend into their surroundings and help in busy commerce areas, near schools or by venues where large events are held,” said Brooks. “Despite their small size, they can take as long to plan and implement as a full-size cell site. Our teams are already planning ahead for enhancements in future years.”

(August 17, 2023) – Cellcom is now accepting applications for the 2023 Green Gifts program. Through Green Gifts, Cellcom donates proceeds from its cell phone recycling program to local organizations, programs and projects that are dedicated to or support the environment, ranging from environmental education to preservation to sustainability.

“Northeast Wisconsin has an abundance of lakes, rivers, forests, and wildlife. It’s what attracts many of us to the area, whether it’s for our residence or recreation. And it is up to us to protect these natural resources,” said Cindy Durand, senior director of marketing communications, government relations and sustainability at Cellcom. “We’re excited to support nonprofits that are leading the way as environmental stewards. These efforts pave the way for our communities to connect with nature by enhancing natural areas, providing educational programming, and spearheading research efforts.”

Green Gifts complete the green cycle that starts with consumers being environmentally conscious and recycling their old handsets.

“We encourage you to recycle old, unused phones at a local Cellcom location for responsible disposal. This keeps harmful materials out of landfills and supports local organizations of all sizes whose work is positively impacting the community and building a greener tomorrow,” said Durand.

This year a total of $23,000 will be donated across Cellcom’s service area. Applications must be submitted by September 21. The online application and additional criteria can be found at www.cellcom.com/greengifts. Award recipients will be notified in October.

Cellcom Enhances Wireless Service Throughout Oconto and Shawano Counties

Eight Towers Added in Oconto County and Additional Enhancements Completed

lakeshore and lake

Oconto, WI (July 28, 2023) – Wireless usage continues to climb and the desire for cellular connections stretches beyond cities and towns to rural lakes, trails, and forests. Local wireless provider Cellcom has significantly invested in its network in Oconto County and Shawano County to deliver strong wireless service to area residents and visitors. Eight cell sites were activated in the last year to help fill in coverage gaps and further enhance the overall wireless experience.

“As demand for cell service continues to increase, particularly data, these new cell sites also move users off high-traffic sites, which helps improve everyone’s experience,” said Rick Brooks, CTO and VP of Engineering for Cellcom. “Over the past year, we also added capacity at every site in Shawano and Oconto Counties to deliver faster speeds, more connections at one time or additional coverage. The extra capacity is particularly beneficial during tourism season when we typically see traffic explode as visitors pour into the area. The improvements result in a better wireless experience even during these busy times in the community and on our network.”

The activated new sites are located throughout Oconto County in Oconto, Oconto Falls, Breed, Riverview, Little Suamico, Townsend, Bagley, and Lakewood. An additional site is under way in Oconto. Cellcom is planning to add small cells for further network enhancements. Small cells are miniature, low-powered cell sites placed in more densely populated areas to further improve the wireless experience. Cellcom has active small cells in Shawano today.

“Small cells blend into their surroundings and help in busy commerce areas, near schools or by venues where large events are held. We are planning small cells in Oconto Falls, Suring, and Peshtigo later this year,” said Brooks. “Despite their small size, they can take as long to plan and implement as a full-size cell site. Our teams are already planning for enhancements in future years.”

In addition to network enhancements, customers can take advantage of Wi-Fi Calling. This technology allows users to make calls and send texts and picture messages over a Wi-Fi connection. It’s helpful in fringe coverage areas and does not require a high-speed connection to utilize. Learn more about this service at www.cellcom.com/wificalling.

Wausau, WI (July 28, 2023) – Wireless usage continues to climb and seasonal traffic during summer months in Marathon County adds to the demand for connection. Local wireless provider Cellcom has significantly invested in its network in Marathon County to deliver strong wireless service to area residents and visitors.

“Cellcom has made enhancements at each of its cell sites in Marathon County. The enhancements allow for more devices to be connected at one time, provide faster speeds and expand coverage to reach further,” said Rick Brooks, CTO and VP of Engineering. “This is especially useful during the summer season where we typically see traffic increase significantly. The improvements result in a better wireless experience even during these busy times in the community and on our network.”

In addition to these improvements at every cell site, Cellcom added a new cell site in Wausau last the fall, improving service along N. 28th Avenue. Cellcom is also planning for future network enhancements, which will include new towers and small cells. Small cells are miniature, low-powered cell sites that can be placed in populated areas to further improve the wireless experience.

“Small cells blend into their surroundings and help in busy commerce areas, near schools or by venues where large events are held. We are planning eight small cells in Wausau, Weston and Schofield this year,” said Brooks. “Despite their small size, they can take as long to plan and implement as a full-size cell site. Our teams are already planning ahead for enhancements in future years.”

Einstein Project Hosts Aquatic Robotic Camp, Replicating an Innovative Research Project with Cellcom and UW-Green Bay

buoys floating in water

Green Bay, WI (June 26, 2023) – The Einstein Project is once again hosting its popular Aquatic Robotic Camp, which explores the engineering of traveling on and under the water. This year a new project will also be included with students replicating the award-winning research project being conducted by University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (UW-Green Bay) on a custom-built wireless network that Cellcom deployed for the freshwater research. This exciting collaboration brings together cutting-edge technology and scientific innovation to inspire young minds.

Each year, UW-Green Bay researchers deploy buoys in lower Green Bay equipped with sensors connected to a specialized wireless network built by Cellcom. These sensors measure oxygen levels and water clarity and help scientists better understand and protect the freshwater ecosystem. Aquatic robotic camp attendees will build and deploy their own buoys, modeled after the large research buoys used by UW-Green Bay. They will then monitor the data collected throughout the week, similar to the real-time data collected from UW-Green Bay researchers in the bay of Green Bay.

“The Aquatic Robotic Camp is an exceptional opportunity for young students to engage in hands-on learning and discover the incredible potential of robotics in underwater exploration,” said Dennis Rockhill, Makerspace Director of the Einstein Project. “Incorporating the water monitoring project from UW-Green Bay and Cellcom adds a whole new dimension to the camp, exposing campers to a real-world research project and giving them a tangible application for the concepts being learned in camp, which we hope inspires them to pursue STEAM careers.”

The water monitoring project was recognized with the 2022 Climate Changemaker award from the CTIA Wireless Foundation for using wireless technology to address climate change.

“At Cellcom, we believe wireless technology fuels innovation. Our collaboration with UW-Green Bay creatively leverages our wireless infrastructure for critical environmental research to support sustainability efforts. Now that same network is supporting an educational experience that is inspiring the next generation of engineers, scientists and innovators. Both of these efforts are planting seeds for the future. We are proud of the work our partners at UW-Green Bay and the Einstein Project are doing,” said Brighid Riordan, CEO of Cellcom.

The Aquatic Robotic Camp is part of the Einstein Project’s ongoing efforts to provide engaging educational experiences that spark curiosity, nurture creativity, and cultivate a passion for STEAM subjects. It’s hosted in partnership with UW-Green Bay Camps and Youth Programs.

Volunteers Seeding Pollinator Gardens in Meadowbrook Park on May 13

Village of Howard project supported by Packerland Sunrise Rotary Club, Cellcom and Green Bay Packer Foundation

Howard, WI (May 10, 2023) – The Village of Howard is taking the next steps to add pollinator-friendly spaces at Meadowbrook Park. On May 13, volunteers led by the Packerland Sunrise Rotary Club will be spreading the seed in the new pollinator spaces that were cleared of invasive species last fall by grazing goats. The project was funded by donations from Cellcom and the Green Bay Packers Foundation.

“Pollinators are vital to sustaining healthy ecosystems that support everything from the food we eat to clean air to stable soils. With research showing that pollinator populations are on the decline, we need to do what we can to prevent further loss. The village of Howard is taking action and hoping to further inspire our residents and other communities, as well,” said Paul Evert, Village of Howard Administrator. “We’re grateful for support from community partners include the Packerland Sunrise Rotary Club, Cellcom and the Green Bay Packers Foundation.”

Cellcom donated funds for the initial clearing of the space, which was completed by goats last fall to limit negative environmental impact of the project. Goats graze as a herd and are known to eat almost anything within the confines of a fenced in area. This includes invasive, hard-to-eliminate plants like Canada goldenrod and buckthorn that are present in Meadowbrook Park. The restoration grazing service meant no gas-powered heavy equipment or herbicides.

This weekend, volunteers will tackle the next step of spreading the seeds, which were purchased thanks to a grant from the Green Bay Packers Foundation. Pollinator projects take time to reach full growth, however, residents should enjoy some first-year flowers–and the pollinators they attract—this year.

“This project will beautify and make use of vacant land within Meadowbrook Park that would otherwise not see much attention. We hope residents will stop down and see the space as it grows and consider adding natural landscaping at their homes and businesses in the future,” said Evert. “While we are in the midst of No Mow May, which is a great start for our pollinators until other plants bloom, natural landscaping allows for longer-term pollinator support.”

To support residential pollinator projects, Brown County Land & Water Conservation has pollinator seed mix available for purchase along with a resource guide from Brown County UW-Extension. The seed mix is available at their office at 2019 Technology Way, Ste. 104, Green Bay between 7:00AM-3:30PM. The packet will cover up to 1000 square feet for $15. The office can be reached at 920-391-4637.
