Eagle River, WI (November 3, 2017) – Northland Pines Farm to School has been selected as a 2017 Cellcom Green Gift recipient. The organization received a $900 Green Gift from Cellcom to expand its school garden program through the winter months.
“Much of the growing season in the northwoods occurs while students are on summer break. This means that children get to plant and sometimes harvest, but some may miss that part of the cycle,” said Jasmyn Schmidt, Northland Pines Farm to School nutrition educator. “With the Cellcom Green Gift, we are going to be able to carry garden involvement and experiences through the winter months.”
Funds from the Cellcom Green Gift will allow Northland Pines to purchase a grow cart with lights that can be rolled from classroom to classroom expand the students access to the garden and help make them more responsible for the plants themselves. Students will grow the plants from seed, harvest and prepare them, as well as facilitate the growing of some fresh winter produce for donation to the local food bank.
“We live north of most of the agricultural area in Wisconsin, so students are often unfamiliar with how food grows, with many thinking that it comes from the store. The results is children who are not gardening at home and eating mostly prepackaged foods. Access to real fresh foods, and the knowledge of how to grow them at home, may help break this cycle, as well as improve our local environment,” said Schmidt.
Northland Pines Farm to School was among 33 green organizations that received a share of the $44,000 in Green Gifts from Cellcom this year. The Green Gifts program launched in 2010 and uses funds generated from Cellcom’s cell phone recycling program to fund green nonprofit initiatives. Customers and community members can bring in their old or unwanted phones to be reused and recycled. Cellcom sends the phones to recyclers who in return send money to Cellcom for the materials that were saved from the phones. Cellcom’s Green Gift program completes the green cycle that starts with consumers being environmentally-conscious and donating their devices.
“Our service area is fortunate to be teeming with non-profits that are creatively using their resources to help the environment though education and activism. Donating your phone allows us to contribute to their efforts through our Green Gifts program and ultimately work toward a greener tomorrow,” said Brighid Riordan, director of public affairs and customer experience initiatives at Cellcom.
