Bees-and-butterflies-program-at-Heckrodt

Menasha, WI (October 25, 2017) – Heckrodt Wetland Reserve has been selected as a 2017 Cellcom Green Gift recipient. The organization received a $1000 Green Gift from Cellcom to support its Nature Friends ‘til Summers End program, a free naturalist-led summer program that provides hands-on nature-based opportunities for families in the Fox Valley area.

“The Fox Cities L.I.F.E. (Leading Indicators for Excellence) Study showed that while residents in our community felt protecting our environment should be one of the area’s major priorities, the ability to invest in needed environmental initiatives is hampered lack of public awareness, understanding, and funding. Heckrodt promotes participation in accessible and affordable hands-on environmental education programs that increase an understanding and appreciation of our natural world,” said Luke Schiller, naturalist and public program coordinator at Heckrodt.

The Green Gift from Cellcom helps keep the program free for participants. Nature Friends ‘til Summers End takes place in June, July and August. Topics include turtles and frogs, butterflies and bees, and birds – each promising hands-on engagement and fun, with a dose of higher environmental importance.

“We are currently seeing declines in our amphibian, reptile, honeybee and migrating bird populations, so it is crucial to educate the youth and general public of today on how to save these populations,” said Schiller. “The hands-on experiences offered teach the importance of each of these populations while fostering an ethic in environmental stewardship to protect them.”

Heckrodt Wetland Reserve was among 33 green organizations that received a share of the $44,000 in Green Gifts from Cellcom this year. The Green Gifts program launched in 2010 and uses funds generated from Cellcom’s cell phone recycling program to fund green nonprofit initiatives. Customers and community members can bring in their old or unwanted phones to be reused and recycled. Cellcom sends the phones to recyclers who in return send money to Cellcom for the materials that were saved from the phones. Cellcom’s Green Gift program completes the green cycle that starts with consumers being environmentally-conscious and donating their devices.

“Our service area is fortunate to be teeming with non-profits that are creatively using their resources to help the environment though education and activism. Donating your phone allows us to contribute to their efforts through our Green Gifts program and ultimately work toward a greener tomorrow,” said Brighid Riordan, director of public affairs and customer experience initiatives at Cellcom.
