Sturgeon Bay, WI (November 14, 2017) – Crossroads at Big Creek and The Ridges Sanctuary have been announced as 2017 Cellcom Green Gift recipients. The organizations each received a $500 Green Gift from Cellcom.
Crossroads at Big Creek will use their Green Gift to begin work on its proposed swale complex. The organization is in the process of expanding the capacity of its parking lot. While engineering the parking lot expansion, a significant amount of excess water was backing up from several artificial ponds which were built by damming the normal water flow. The project will remove the dams and to replace the ponds by excavating a connected chain of swales, which will channel the water away from the parking lot and buildings. This will not only eliminate excess water, but restore the watershed and improve wildlife habitat.
The Ridges Sanctuary will use their Green Gift to purchase a visual presenter kit for the Kids Nature Discovery Area. This will help make the area a more dynamic space for children. With the proper tools children have the ability to learn more about the natural world and the importance of being good stewards of the environment.
The organizations were among 33 green organizations that received a share of the $44,000 in Green Gifts from Cellcom this year. The Green Gifts program launched in 2010 and uses funds generated from Cellcom’s cell phone recycling program to fund green nonprofit initiatives. Customers and community members can bring in their old or unwanted phones to be reused and recycled. Cellcom sends the phones to recyclers who in return send money to Cellcom for the materials that were saved from the phones. Cellcom’s Green Gift program completes the green cycle that starts with consumers being environmentally-conscious and donating their devices.
“Our service area is fortunate to be teeming with non-profits that are creatively using their resources to help the environment though education and activism. Donating your phone allows us to contribute to their efforts through our Green Gifts program and ultimately work toward a greener tomorrow,” said Brighid Riordan, director of public affairs and customer experience initiatives at Cellcom.
