pond at osprey point

De Pere, WI (November 5, 2017) – The Brown County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League has been selected as a 2017 Cellcom Green Gift recipient. The organization received a $1500 Green Gift from Cellcom to construct a natural playground at Osprey Point (3320 Monroe Rd., De Pere).

“The natural play area will lend itself to teaching children about the importance of clean water, clean air, pollinators, native plants, and the preservation of forests and wildlife habitat. The playground is designed to feature natural components that allow children to connect with the outdoors and explore nature,” said Jodi Arndt Labs, board of directors for Brown County Izaak Walton League. “The natural playground features natural materials that will challenge and inspire children’s thinking. The play area will also allow children to get up close and personal with the environment and allow them to develop a strong connection to nature.”

The natural playground will have several areas constructed of natural materials including logs, boulders, trees and water. It features balancing logs, post maze, grass play berms, boulder climbing wall, sand pit and wading pond. The natural play will also include a bee and butterfly garden that is designed as a maze for children to explore and learn about the importance of bees and butterflies to our environment. Funding from the Cellcom Green Gift will help purchase natural materials educational signage to enhance the learning opportunities of the space.

The Brown County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League was among 30 green organizations that received a share of the $40,000 in Green Gifts from Cellcom this year. The Green Gifts program launched in 2010 and uses funds generated from Cellcom’s cell phone recycling program to fund green nonprofit initiatives. Customers and community members can bring in their old or unwanted phones to be reused and recycled. Cellcom sends the phones to recyclers who in return send money to Cellcom for the materials that were saved from the phones. Cellcom’s Green Gift program completes the green cycle that starts with consumers being environmentally-conscious and donating their devices.

“Our service area is fortunate to be teeming with non-profits that are creatively using their resources to help the environment though education and activism. Donating your phone allows us to contribute to their efforts through our Green Gifts program and ultimately work toward a greener tomorrow,” said Brighid Riordan, director of public affairs and customer experience initiatives at Cellcom.
