Eagle River, WI (April 27, 2017) - With the help of Cellcom’s Virtual Reality (VR) Kits for Classrooms program, students at Northland Pines High School will be using virtual reality to travel around the world and beyond.

Virtual reality gives teachers the power to take their classroom anywhere in the world, fully immersing students in a lesson and allowing them to experience new places and explore new ideas. Dave Strong, teacher at Northland Pines High School, provided the virtual reality experience to his classes this week. Students were each given a Virtual Reality (VR) viewer and smartphone to explore. With the freedom to explore education apps suggested by Cellcom as well as investigate apps from the app store, students shared their experiences and excitement with Mr. Strong as well as one another.

Dave Strong said, “Students were very interested in the devices. As tech consumers they were already familiar with the concept but the initial experience was a real eye-opener. There was a wide range of reactions and interests.  Mostly, students just enjoyed the ability to explore the world through VR  This week, we were all learners together; trying to figure out the device and excited about the opportunity.”

Cellcom sees VR as an opportunity to use its technology to enhance learning and give students a greater understanding. “Smartphones have evolved into powerful tools that put a wealth of information and resources at your fingertips. These devices are now bridging another gap, making virtual reality experiences accessible as an educational tool. We are excited to put this technology in the hands of local educators so they cannot only engage students in their curriculums, but inspire them with the infinite possibilities of technology,” said Brighid Riordan, director of public affairs and customer experience initiatives.

Cellcom launched its VR kit program in October 2016. Teachers throughout Cellcom’s service area are able to reserve a bank of 15 smartphones and receive free accompanying virtual reality viewers. The schools have a week to use the VR kits to experience new places and explore new ideas. To learn more, visit cellcom.com/classroom.
