Menasha, WI (October 21, 2016) –Heckrodt Wetland Reserve has been selected as a 2016 Cellcom Green Gift recipient. The non-profit received a $1000 Green Gift from Cellcom to support its ‘Nature Friends Til Summers End’ program.

Heckrodt Wetland is a 5-acre reserve in Menasha that aims to educate people in the importance of conserving our natural resources while promoting recreation opportunities at the property. The ‘Nature Friends Til Summer’s End’ series is designed to get families outdoors to experience the natural world.

“The Green Gift from Cellcom will allow us to add a citizen science component to the program. Not only will participants be learning about turtles, frogs, honey bees and wetland birds, but they’ll be observing and documenting them,” said Luke Schiller, naturalist and public program coordinator at Heckrodt. “Residents in our community feel protecting the environment should be a major priority, but public awareness is lacking. The Nature Friends program provides an accessible, affordable and hands-on opportunity to increase understanding of our natural world.”

Heckrodt was among 22 green organizations that received a share of the $37,800 in Green Gifts from Cellcom this year. The Green Gifts program launched in 2010 and uses funds generated from Cellcom’s cell phone recycling program to fund green nonprofit initiatives. Customers and community members can bring in their old or unwanted phones to be reused and recycled. Cellcom sends the phones to recyclers who in return send money to Cellcom for the materials that were saved from the phones. Cellcom’s Green Gift program completes the green cycle that starts with consumers being environmentally-conscious and donating their devices.

The 2016 Cellcom Green Gifts were awarded to non-profits throughout Cellcom’s service area and included Gordon Bubolz Nature Preserve (Appleton), Heckrodt Wetland Reserve (Menasha), Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance (Appleton), Boys & Girls Club of Greater Green Bay, NEW Zoo & Adventure Park (Suamico), Greater Green Bay YMCA, River District Development Foundation (Merrill), Northland Pines Farm to School Program (Eagle River), Trees for Tomorrow (Eagle River), Wild Instincts (Rhinelander), Open Door Bird Sanctuary (Sturgeon Bay), Woodland Dunes Nature Center (Two Rivers), Crossroads at Big Creek, Inc. (Sturgeon Bay), Kelly Lake Advancement Association (Suring), Navarino Nature Center, Stockbridge Munsee Community (Bowler), Wisconsin Waterfowl Association (Abrams), The Etude Group (Sheboygan), Bookworm Gardens (Sheboygan), Maywood Environmental Park (Sheboygan), Friends of Mead/McMillan Association (Milladore), and Boys & Girls Club of Portage County (Stevens Point).

Cellcom is proud to support organizations of all sizes, whose work is impacting the community and building a greener tomorrow. The company’s recycling program has generated $266,975 for local charities over the past 13 years.
